NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson’s family is reeling from a major tragedy. His father and mother-in-law, Jack and Terry Janway, and 11-year-old nephew, Dalton, died in a shooting in their home in Oklahoma, according to reports.
A report from Muskogee Police Department showed that 911 dispatch received a call at 9:05 p.m. on Monday. A female voice on the phone stated that there was a disturbance and mentioned someone having a gun before she hung up.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a person lying in the hallway and determined that the person was deceased. Shortly after they had arrived at the scene, officers heard another gunshot go off on the other side of the house.
When they made their way and checked the entire house, officers discovered two more bodies and concluded that three people had died in the incident. The three dead were identified as Jack, 69, Terry, 68, and their 11-year-old grandson, Dalton.
Jack and Terry are Jimmie’s wife, Chandra Janway’s parents, while Dalton is the couple’s nephew.
According to officials the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. The police also confirmed that Terry is being considered as the suspect but as for now her motive remains unclear. It is also unknown whether it was Terry who called the police.
Lynn Hamlin, PIO of the Muskogee Police Department, said to the media, “Yes, I’m able to confirm that is correct information.”
After this tragedy, Legacy Motor Club announced that Jimmie would not be racing the following weekend. “Legacy Motor Club has elected to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago,” the club wrote in a statement on Twitter.
“The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made,” it clarified.
