Sophia Loren is one of the most celebrated actresses of classical Hollywood cinema, and was internationally recognized as a sex symbol during the peak of her stardom.
However, at the age of 89, she’s not as young as she used to be.
In fact, the Italian actress – most well-known for her roles in films like Two Women (1961) and Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1963) – took a tumble at home in Switzerland last month and sustained a number of injuries that required medical attention, according to alarming reports.
Loren is said to have suffered several fractures during the fall, the most serious of which was one to her femur that left her requiring surgery.
Sophia Loren’s injury
Mere days after turning 89, Loren was reportedly due to open a restaurant that would bear her name in Bari, Italy on September 26. However, the Italian icon slipped in her bathroom, leading to the injuries mentioned above. As per the Hollywood Reporter, Loren’s sons, Carlo and Edoardo, stayed by her side in hospital.
At the time of her accident, a source told the Hollywood Reporter that there was “cautious optimism” regarding Loren’s condition moving forward following surgery on her femur.
“A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures,” the team behind the restaurant Loren was due to open wrote on Instagram.
“Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation. Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery.”
Sad update
After sustaining serious fractures to her hip and femur, her agent Andrea Giusti stated that she was recovering well.
Though, things might not be as sunny as they seem, with a long-time close friend of Loren telling Radar Online that the actress is not doing so well. “She’s literally on her last legs,” the friend told the outlet.
It comes as no surprise that the injuries Loren sustained during her fall are associated with worse outcomes due to her age, with medical experts revealing that hip fractures are one of the most common injuries from falling in older people, per Do You Remember.
Loren’s rep has since stated that the actress “will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.”
After the sudden fall, Loren herself updated her fans on her condition, assuring them that she’d be back to normal soon. “I thank everyone for the closeness and affection that they have been showing me,” she said. “I’m better, I just need to do rehabilitation and to take some time off.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sophia Loren at this difficult time.
