Maybe there is no such thing as everlasting love…
Over the weekend, news broke that Meryl Streep and Don Gummer had been living separate lives for the past six years. The couple, who had been married for 45 years, were no longer.
“Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a representative for Streep told People.
Although the couple had not been seen together publicly since 2018, there was little to indicate there was trouble in paradise.
The pair celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 30, and just as recently as Friday, Streep, 74, was seen wearing her wedding ring at the 2023 Princesa de Asturias Awards in Spain.
The two met in 1978, shortly after Streep’s boyfriend actor John Cazale died from a battle with lung cancer.
Streep and Gummer, 76, were introduced to each other by the Only Murders in the Building actress’ brother.
While it reportedly wasn’t love at first sight, the pair began engaging letters before Streep moved into Gummer’s apartment.
Within six months of meeting – and six months of Cazale’s death – Streep and Gummer got married.
Many initially questioned her decision to marry so quickly, but several decades and four children later proved it wasn’t a rash decision.
It was meant to be… until it wasn’t.
When Streep accepted her 2012 Best Actress Oscar, she made sure to thank her husband first.
“First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me,” she proudly said.
It’s always sad when anyone who has been married for several decades breaks up. We can only hope that the separation was amicable and both sides are still cordial.
