Kate Cassidy has shared the devastating moment she learned that her boyfriend, former One Direction star Liam Payne, had died.
In an emotional interview, Cassidy, 25, revealed that Payne, who was reportedly preparing to propose, had tragically passed away on October 16 last year.
The couple had been in a relationship for two years and had been staying at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when the singer suffered a fatal fall from a third-floor balcony.
A Tragic End to a Getaway
Cassidy and Payne had traveled to Argentina together in early October to support his former bandmate, Niall Horan, at a concert. While Cassidy returned to their home in Florida a week later, Payne decided to extend his stay. It was during this time that the tragic accident occurred.
Alberto Crescenti, Director of Argentina’s Emergency Medical Services, confirmed details of the incident during a broadcast on the nation’s Todo Noticias TV channel.
“At 17:04, through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of a hotel,” Crescenti stated. “At 17:11, a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man. Later, we found out he was a singer in a musical group.”
He added: “Unfortunately, his injuries were incompatible with life as a result of the fall. There was no possibility of resuscitation.”
The Moment Cassidy Found Out
Cassidy, who has since moved out of the couple’s Florida home and returned to New Jersey, described the harrowing moment she was told about Payne’s death.
“I feel blessed I didn’t find out over social media because I just couldn’t even imagine that,” she said in a recent interview with The Sun. “I was in our home with our dog, scrolling TikTok, when one of Liam’s friends called me.”
Initially, she struggled to process the news.
“That moment… it’s blank; it’s blacked out in my head,” Cassidy recalled. “I didn’t believe it at first. I thought it was just a rumor or something somebody made up to get views. Then instantly, I had a bad feeling in my gut. I thought, ‘Why would somebody make this up? Is this true?’”
As the reality set in, she attempted to contact Payne.
“I tried to call him. I called pretty much everybody. Then I was in touch with his family, and my mum got the first flight out to be with me,” she said. “I remember pacing around the house—poor Nala [the couple’s dog] thought I was trying to play, she kept jumping up at me. I didn’t sleep at all that night.”
Remembering Liam Payne
Cassidy spoke of how surreal Payne’s passing still feels, admitting that she sometimes speaks about him in the present tense because “it doesn’t feel fully real.” She thinks about him “every second of every day.”
She described Payne as her “soulmate” and praised his humble and down-to-earth nature despite his global fame.
“He was one of the most normal people you could ever hope to come across,” she said.
We are sending our deepest thoughts and sympathies to Kate Cassidy and Liam Payne’s family at this difficult time.
