Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican singer who has three Grammy awards to their name, is set to headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show.
The announcement, however, has caused some controversy as U.S. President Donald Trump’s adviser Corey Lewandowski has stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be present at the venue.
The announcement was made by Lewandowski while he appeared on Benny Johnson’s YouTube show.
When Johnson was questioned about whether ICE would be enforcing immigration laws at Super Bowl LX because of the fact that Bad Bunny had been tapped as the next performer for the halftime show, Lewandowski said, “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else.”
He went on to say, “We will find you, we will apprehend you, we will put you in a detention facility, and we will deport you. So know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is contrary to how it used to be.”
The statement comes just days after Bad Bunny and the NFL announced that he would be the halftime headliner for the show performed at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8.
This will be the only time the singer will be performing in the U.S. amid his current Debí Tirar Más Fotos world tour.
Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, who goes by the stage name Bad Bunny, explained in a previous interview that he did not add any U.S. dates for his shows on purpose out of fears of ICE raids at his concerts.
In the interview, he said, “There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate—I’ve performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful.”
“But there was the issue of—like, f*****g ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,” he shared.
“I’ve been thinking about it these days, and after discussing it with my team, I think I’ll do just one date in the United States,” he said on X (a post originally in Spanish), this was before he announced he is going to do the halftime show.
Lewandowski, however, was not too happy with the NFL choosing Bad Bunny as the headliner. He said, “It’s so shameful that they’ve decided to pick somebody who seems to hate America so much to represent them at the halftime show.”
“We should be trying to be inclusive and not exclusive. There are plenty of great bands and entertainment people out there who could be playing at that show that would be bringing people together and not separating them,” he added.
He shared that ICE enforcement would not be limited to just concerts.
“If there are illegal aliens, I don’t care if it’s a concert for Johnny Smith or Bad Bunny or anybody else, we’re going to do enforcement everywhere because we are going to make Americans safe,” he added.
“That is a directive from the president. If you’re in this country illegally, do yourself a favor: Go home.”
The President was also unhappy with the NFL. He posted on his platform, Truth Social, “Hard to watch the new NFL kickoff. It’s wrong on every level. They should end it, immediately. Bad for the game of football!”
While some are not pleased with Bad Bunny’s upcoming performance, others are excited for his halftime show.
Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation has produced the halftime shows since 2019, said in a statement, “What Benito has done and continues to do for Puerto Rico is truly inspiring. We are honored to have him on the world’s biggest stage.”
This performance will make Bad Bunny the first Latin male artist to headline a solo show at the Super Bowl stage, which he is expected to perform exclusively in Spanish.
The Super Bowl halftime show is a huge honor and is watched by 130 million people every year.
He gave a statement about his upcoming NFL halftime show performance, which said, “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history.”
