Diane Keaton’s death came suddenly. The actor died on October 11, and while the cause of death is unknown at the time, reports are claiming that her health deteriorated very fast in recent months. Meanwhile, Keaton underwent many health battles from a young age and even had cancer.
Diane Keaton is being honored all over the world following the announcement of her passing last weekend, at the age of 79. The Annie Hall star, who received an Academy Award for the previously mentioned film, has not been seen in public for a long time.
One who met Keaton shortly before her death was her friend, Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager. She told People that they had met “two or three weeks ago,” and that Diane had “lost so much weight.”
“She had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything. “She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she’d lost,” Sager said, adding that Keaton was “a magic light for everyone.”
Why Diane Keaton died is not known to the public. She has basically only spent time with her family for the last months, and even old friends were, according to another source, shocked about the news of her death.
Sadly, Keaton dealt with many health struggles throughout her life, with one of them being skin cancer. When she was 21, she was diagnosed with skin cancer. That’s the reason why she wears her signature hat for more than just fashion.
Diane Keaton’s health battles
“It’s a family history,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 2015. “I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put the sunblock on.”
Even though she was diagnosed, she didn’t take care of the issues until much later.
“Back in my 20s I didn’t pay attention much,” she admitted. “I didn’t research and didn’t really care and that was stupid because it’s dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn’t start sun care until my 40s.”
At the same time, cancer wasn’t the only thing Diane Keaton was battling. The actress, writer and singer has been open about having bulimia. Once, when she was younger, she was asked to lose 10 pounds for the part in Hair on Broadway. Tragically, it made her self-conscious about her body, saying to Dr OZ in 2014 that she is an “addict.
“All I did was feed my hunger, so I am an addict,” she said. “It’s true. I’m an addict in recovery, I’ll always be an addict. I have an addictive nature to me.”
Struggles with dementia
She added that she usually ate around 20,000 calories a day, including a “bucket of chicken, several orders of fries with blue cheese and ketchup, a couple TV dinners, a quart of soda, pounds of candy, a whole cake and three banana cream pies.”
Once done, she threw it up. But eventually, Diane Keaton was getting the help she needed and recovered.
“Somebody mentioned that I seemed to have some mental issues, so I went to an analyst. I would go five days a week,” Keaton said in the interview with Dr. Oz.
The actress said that although she initially lied to her specialist, she eventually opened up. She went to her psychiatrist five days a week for 18 months. She told Ellen that the sessions were a success “because I talked. I spoke it out. I said my thoughts and feelings. And I feel like, once you do that, you own it. To keep secrets doesn’t help you at all.”
The bulimia battled lasted for four years.
“I have nothing to hide. It’s not relevant, but for me it feels good,” she wrote in her 2011 book Then Again, per the Daily News. “I think I’m a sister to all the rest of the women, and I’m sure men as well, who have had some kind of eating disorder, and I’m a part of the team.”
Rest in peace, Diane Keaton.
