On Tuesday this week, season 34 of “Dancing with the Stars” (“DWTS”) concluded with a winner being announced. However, not everyone was happy with the winning pair this season.

This season’s winner was Robert Irwin, the son of late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. His sister, Bindi Irwin, also won the coveted Mirrorball Trophy about a decade ago. The young Irwin has followed in his late father’s footsteps and works in wildlife conservation as well.

He won the competition with his dance partner, Whitney Carson, who is a professional dancer.

Irwin and Carson really gave it their all to the finale; their dynamic performance really endeared them to the audience. Their fellow finalists for this season were Chmerkovskiy, Jordan Chiles, and Ezra Sosa, Elaine Hendrix and Alan Bersten, and Dylan Efron and Daniella Karagach.

They all performed three dances, which included a Judges’ Choice round, an Instant Dance round, and a Freestyle round. For their Judges’ Choice round, they chose a final ballroom or Latin dance style.

For their Instant Dance, they tested their improvisational skills, as the contestants had mere minutes to learn the routine. And finally, the couples were allowed a Freestyle round to showcase an energetic performance.

The show allows fans to vote for their favorite couple. The fan-voted scores are combined with the judges’ scores to determine the winner.

Irwin and Carson were incredible on the dance floor. They performed a Quickstep routine to the Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” for the Judge’s Choice round. They performed to Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” and Avicii’s “The Nights” for the Freestyle round. For their Instant Dance, they did an energetic Cha Cha to Cake by the Ocean by DNCE.

Earle and Chmerkovskiy, and Irwin and Carson were said to have recieved more votes than any other contestants on the show’s history. Judge Julianne Hough also shared how the gap between the pairs was the tightest one she has ever experienced. But finally, Robert Irwin and Whitney Carson were announced as the season’s winners.

However, not everyone was happy with the decision, with some outrightly saying that Earle and Chmerkovskiy, were robbed. One person wrote, “Alix Earle was robbed she should’ve won DWTS, the finale dance was simply phenomenal.”

Another added, “My first #DWTS and as great as Robert was, Alix Earle was robbed. But still enjoyable season. #DWTS34” “Alix Earle should have won. I voted at least one million times for her,” another disappointed fan added.

Before the finale aired, Witney Carson shared that Irwin had been struggling with rib pain but powered through. “11 weeks of crazy, vigorous, hard dancing. My body is feeling it. Robert’s body is feeling it. We’re, like, kind of falling apart right now. Just trying to keep it together for, like, two more days. Literally today and tomorrow, and then it’s over,” she said.

She also shared how close she and Irwin had gotten during the season’s filming. She talked of how the young Irwin had found heartfelt ways of sharing his late father’s memory. Earlier this month he shared the two items he keeps on him from his late father; a ring crafted from the keys to his childhood home and one of his father’s shirts.

He shared that he wore the shirt to every rehearsal even though at this point it is pretty worn. “Each one of the tears and holes and missing buttons tells another story and this shirt definitely saw a lot. I guess it’s a good example for how dad lived his life: At 100%,” he said.

He went on to reveal, “Before you guys see my dance in costume, I’ve always done that dance — at least once — in dad’s shirt. It just keeps me close to home, keeps me close to him. It just feels like a big hug every time I put it on.”

As for what’s next for Robert Irwin, he immediately flies to New York, after which he leaves for South Africa to film a project, before he finally heads home to Australia.

He also shared that his Dancing With the Stars parner Witney Carson will be joining him in Australia.

The journey Irwin went on on the show is truly beautiful, he said about it, “I’ve been able to write my own legacy with Witney as we tell stories of positivity, vulnerability, passion and fun.”

He added further, “I’m a proud Wildlife Warrior, and I’ll always carry on my dad’s mission. I’m so grateful that I can do that in the ballroom.”
