Household urged to keep one surprising item ready at home in case of war

What would we do if World War 3 broke out? How would you react, and where would you take shelter?

One thing that many people still don’t have in their homes could turn out to be a lifesaver.

Tensions around the world are higher than ever.

With the U.S. and Israel recently carrying out airstrikes in Iran — including the attack that killed Ali Khameini and members of his family — and Iran striking back at countries tied to the U.S., fears of a global conflict have many Americans on edge.

Even the British government is taking no chances. Through its “Prepare” campaign, the UK has issued advice on how households can survive a worst-case scenario — and one item on the list might surprise you: a wind-up radio.

“There might be updates communicated by radio during a power cut,” the government warns.

“A car radio can be used, however in severe weather it might be safer to stay inside. Write down on paper the frequencies of any local or national radio stations you use for news updates.”

In other words, if a full-scale world war broke out, your cell phone or smart speaker might be useless — but a simple wind-up radio could keep you informed. Officials also recommend pairing it with a wind-up torch, in case power grids fail entirely.

Even countries like Sweden are urging citizens to be prepared. Authorities say a wind-up (hand-crank) radio is a crucial item to have at home, especially during power outages, crises, or even war. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency recommends having a radio that works on batteries, solar power, or a hand-crank so people can still receive important updates when other systems fail.

It’s not just the UK or Sweden thinking ahead. Across social media, viewers are watching simulations of “most dangerous” countries if WW3 erupts. According to a viral video from GeoMotion, the top five include:

  1. The U.S. – “Not because it’s weak, but because it’s everywhere.”
  2. Iran – “One spark in the Middle East and Iran becomes the center of a regional explosion overnight.”
  3. Pakistan – “A nuclear-armed state with constant tension with India. One mistake could mean catastrophe.”
  4. Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania are “right next to Russia, and backed by NATO. One move here could trigger global war.”
  5. Japan – “US military bases, China nearby, North Korea next door. Any Pacific war puts Japan on the front line.”

While the world focuses on hotspots, experts warn that a “small” nuclear war could devastate billions of lives. Armageddon researcher Annie Jacobsen told Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO podcast:

“Hundreds of millions of people die in the fireballs, no question. Places like Iowa and Ukraine would be just snow for 10 years, and so agriculture would fail. When agriculture fails, people just die.”

The bright side? Jacobsen says two regions might survive the fallout: New Zealand and Australia, thanks to their relative isolation and ability to sustain agriculture.

Still, the takeaway is clear: if you’re worried about a potential global conflict, one small, old-school item could make all the difference. In a world where cell towers might fail and power grids could be knocked out, a wind-up radio could be your lifeline — literally keeping you connected to vital news when everything else goes dark.
