Washington D.C is set to get a new monument. On Friday, the Trump administration revealed more of its plans to build a 250-foot triumphal arch.
The proposed monument—dubbed the “Arc de Trump” in reference to the Parisian Arc de Triomphe it seeks to emulate—would place Donald Trump alongside iconic U.S. presidents such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson, granting him a permanent memorial in Washington, D.C.
The plans were presented for the first time in October last year. At that time, Trump told donors, while showing a proposal for the Arc de Trump, “Every time somebody rides over that beautiful bridge to the Lincoln Memorial, they literally say something is supposed to be here. We have versions of it… This is a mock-up.”
One of the mockups featured marble eagles, with a gold statue of Lady Liberty in the center. It would be even larger than the Lincoln Memorial.
“This would be small, medium, and large… I happen to think the large by far looks the best,” Trump said, according to Time.
Trump administration release plans for 250 foot tall ‘Arc De Trump’ in Washington DC
Plans for the controversial new monument have now been submitted. The proposal, sent to a board made up of Trump-appointed members after six previous commissioners were dismissed, reveals striking details about what’s being called the “Arc de Trump.”
According to the plans, the massive structure will stand 250 feet tall and be crowned by a towering 60-foot golden statue of Lady Liberty. If built, it would rise roughly 20 feet above the US Capitol building.
But that’s not all. Architects at Harrison Design have envisioned bold lettering stretching across the monument, reading: “One Nation Under God.” At the base, two golden lions stand guard, adding to the grand and imposing design.
The announcement comes as Donald Trump continues to push for major changes to Washington, DC. This follows earlier, stalled plans to construct a huge ballroom on the site of the former East Wing.
Sharing the news on Truth Social, Trump said, “This will be a wonderful addition to the Washington DC area for all Americans to enjoy for many decades to come!”
Still, the plans are already sparking debate — and not everyone is convinced this is the legacy the capital needs.
