Vice President JD Vance has revealed that the death of his close friend Charlie Kirk played a role in his family’s decision to have another child.
JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, are currently expecting their fourth child, a baby boy due next month. The couple already share three children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
In his upcoming book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Vance reflects on the impact Charlie Kirk’s death had on his family, according to UNILAD. An excerpt published by The Wall Street Journal describes a conversation that took place after he was killed in 2025.
“As my wife held Charlie Kirk’s widow on the first day of her terrible sorrow, Erika [Kirk] told Usha between sobs that she regretted having only two kids with Charlie.
“For years, I’d asked Usha to have another baby, and for years, she told me she was done, especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight.”
Charlie Kirk and JD Vance were friends
According to Vance, that moment ultimately changed his wife’s perspective.
“But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”
Charlie Kirk launched Turning Point USA in 2012 as an organization focused on promoting conservative values in educational settings. Following his death in september 2025, his wife, Erika Kirk, took over as the group’s CEO.
Vance and Kirk were reportedly close friends, and the vice president has appeared alongside Erika Kirk at Turning Point USA events since Kirk’s death.
The Vances publicly announced in January that they were expecting another child. In a statement shared on X, the couple said: “We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.
“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children.”
The caption read: “We’re very happy to share some exciting news. Our family is growing.”
