Olivia Wilde reveals ‘devastating’ real last name and its pronunciation
The actress and director Olivia Wilde recently discussed the topic during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, where the conversation turned to her family background. Wilde, whose parents are both prominent journalists, was born Olivia Cockburn, a surname that is spelled one way but the pronunciation is actually “Coburn.”
When Shepard initially pronounced it phonetically, Wilde laughed before gently correcting him.
“I’ll tell you something—and there’s no way you would know this—it’s pronounced ‘Coburn,'” she explained, adding that growing up with the surname wasn’t always easy.
The unusual spelling, she said, made her the target of jokes throughout her childhood.
“Which I want you to imagine being a kid…” Wilde remarked before Shepard admitted he was curious what it had been like growing up with a last name that many people mispronounced.
“It’s a Scottish name, and it’s very much like A Boy Named Sue, you know what I mean? Like it’s character building,” she joked, referencing Johnny Cash’s famous song about a child growing up with a name that made him the subject of ridicule.
Wilde continued the joke by suggesting that difficult names might actually help build resilience.
“We should all give our kids devastating middle names just so that you can grow up with something to be totally bullied for,” she laughed.
Despite the teasing, Wilde said the experience taught her an important lesson about handling embarrassment with humor rather than allowing it to become a source of shame.
“I think it was an early important lesson in laughing along,” she explained. “Not in a way that was giving in to the bullies… I just thought it was funny too. I was like, ‘Oh, I get it. That’s funny.'”
As she prepared to enter the entertainment industry, Wilde ultimately decided to leave her birth surname behind.
Rather than choosing a completely random stage name, she selected one inspired by one of her literary heroes—Irish playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde.
The actress has used the surname throughout her career, becoming widely known for starring in films including Tron: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens, and Rush, before transitioning into directing critically acclaimed movies such as Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling.
Wilde also reflected on her family’s accomplished journalism background during the interview. Her father, Andrew Cockburn, serves as the Washington editor for Harper’s Magazine, while her mother, Leslie Cockburn, built a career as an investigative journalist, working with major outlets including CBS, NBC, and PBS Frontline.
Although she eventually chose a different professional name, Wilde’s story highlighted how a childhood experience that once made her feel self-conscious ultimately helped shape both her sense of humor and the identity she would later build in Hollywood.
