South Africa World Cup soccer player Jayden Adams dies at 25. Now his partner’s heartbreaking tribute has left fans in tears.
Jayden Adams, the South African midfielder who played in all three of his country’s group stage games at the 2026 World Cup just weeks ago, has died at the age of 25.
His cause of death has not been confirmed and an investigation has been opened.
Police in Cape Town confirmed that the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a property in Schotsche Kloof, central Cape Town on Saturday July 11. South Africa’s minister of sport Gayton McKenzie confirmed Adams’ death and asked the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation continues.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
Partner’s heartbreaking tribute
Now Adams’ longtime partner Aqueelah Adendorf broke her silence on Instagram with a tribute that has been shared widely across social media.
“There are no words to describe the pain I’m feeling,” she wrote.
“Rest in peace, my love. Thank you for every memory, every laugh, every hug, and every moment we shared. You were not only the love of my life but also my greatest supporter and my best friend. A part of my heart left with you, and I will carry your love with me forever.”
Just six weeks earlier, before Adams’ World Cup debut, Adendorf had posted a lengthy tribute to him on Instagram celebrating how far he had come.
“From the hard work, sacrifices, early mornings, disappointments, and moments nobody saw – you kept going, stayed disciplined, and trusted God through it all. This is only the beginning for you, my love. May God continue to guide your steps and open even bigger doors for your future.”
Adams had just lost his grandmother
Adams started South Africa’s opening two group games against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and came off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea that sent Bafana Bafana into the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
He played the Czech Republic game despite his grandmother having died the day before and was substituted at halftime.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered his condolences, saying the global football community was with Adams’ family and teammates. The South African Football Players Union described his passing as “an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.”
