The world of film is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved stars.
Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared on social media, revealing that Neill passed away suddenly in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his loved ones.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” the statement read.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”
“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
The news has come as a shock to fans around the world, particularly after Neill revealed just a few months ago that he had beaten the rare blood cancer he had been battling for several years. Following groundbreaking CAR T-cell therapy, the actor had spoken joyfully about receiving a clear scan and was looking forward to returning to work.
Born in Northern Ireland before moving to New Zealand as a child, Neill built a remarkable career spanning more than five decades.
Although he appeared in dozens of acclaimed films, including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, and television hits such as Peaky Blinders, it was his portrayal of the intelligent and reluctant dinosaur expert Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park that made him a household name.
He reprised the role in several sequels, introducing the character to a whole new generation of moviegoers.
Following the announcement of his death, tributes have begun pouring in from across the entertainment industry and beyond.
He is survived by his children and grandchildren, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that spans generations of film lovers.
