A family’s stay at a San Diego Airbnb took a creepy turn when a detail in an ordinary piece of beach-themed artwork left them “spiralling.”
On July 2, TikToker Aubrey Birrell shared a clip from her family’s Airbnb in San Diego after a piece of wall art became the strangest part of their vacation.
“We can’t make this up…this is the craziest thing,” she captioned the post.
The framed image captured a busy day at the beach, with waves breaking along the shoreline and people scattered through the shallow water. It looked like the kind of decorative coastal print you’d expect to find in almost any vacation rental.
Then one small detail caught the family’s attention.
“The weirdest thing happened,” Aubrey shared with her followers as she documented the discovery that left her entire family in disbelief.
“Unsettling,” her sister Libby added.
“We’re looking through [the house]. No connections to it,” she explained. “Looking at this picture and my dad is like, ‘This looks like me.’”
‘We’re on our Airbnb wall’
At first, nobody took the comment too seriously, but a closer look confirmed Aubrey’s dad wasn’t imagining things.
“This is my dad. That’s my sister, Libby – 10 years ago,” Aubrey said, pointing the camera at her sister who’s nodding her head.
Then zooming back at the photo, Aubrey continued, “That’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago.”
“They’re literally in the Airbnb picture.”
Libby then spotted another detail.
“We have those swimsuits. We are literally in this picture. We’re on our Airbnb wall.”
Laughing at the coincidence, Aubrey added, “It’s the craziest thing,” while her sister added, “We’re actually spiralling.”
‘Horror movie’
The video quickly drew more than 830,000 comments from viewers, many of whom struggled to explain the unlikely coincidence.
“Literally sounds like the start of a horror movie,” one person wrote, while a second shared: “Everyone’s scared but I’d take it as a sign that you were meant to be there, I think that’s so cool!”
For one viewer, the discovery sparked a completely different realization.
“I’ve always wondered how many pictures I’m in that I’ve never seen and don’t know about.”
One commenter suggested the family make the most of the bizarre discovery.
“Y’all should autograph it.”
‘Owners do a deep dive’
Meanwhile, some were convinced there had to be another explanation.
“So, the owners do a deep dive on your family and print out family portraits you have posted online, to make the house feel homey and welcoming,” one user suggested.
Replying to that comment, one netizen wrote: “That’s not homey or welcoming. Almost everyone would think that’s weird,” another replied, while an Airbnb host added: “As an Airbnb owner…ain’t no one got time for all that haha.”
Not the only family
Among the thousands of comments was one from a viewer who claimed they had experienced something remarkably similar.
“This literally happened at our rented beach house TODAY,” the online user wrote.
“I had seen this TikTok days ago and something made me look at the giant canvas hanging in the primary bath. I immediately see my daughter and her [high school] friend group in the pic…one of whom is with us on this trip!”
The user added, “We live two hours away and have been coming to this beach for decades. CRAZY.”
