An Oklahoma influencer has been shot and killed by her estranged husband in an apparent murder-suicide two weeks after she posted a TikTok video publicly accusing him of being a pedophile.
Sara Gilson, 43, was found dead alongside Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, at a home in Collinsville, Oklahoma in the early hours of July 23.
Police said both died from gunshot wounds to the head in what appears to be a murder-suicide. Duffey shot Gilson before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
Gilson’s young son, who was in the home at the time, ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911, telling dispatchers that his stepfather had shot his mother.
The TikTok that may have cost her her life
On July 11 Gilson posted a TikTok video in which she publicly accused Duffey of being a pedophile, taking part in a trend where users roleplay being interviewed by Netflix for a documentary.
Court records show Duffey had previously been investigated for kissing a juvenile girl, and Gilson had been granted a restraining order against him in the weeks before her death.
Friends and family described Gilson as a devoted mother whose children were the center of her world.
“Sara was an incredible mom. Her children were the center of her world, and everything she did was for them,” read an online fundraiser set up for her two children after her death.
Gilson leaves behind a son and a daughter. Her son has been released into the care of a parent not involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
