John Goodman, 74, looks unrecognizable after losing nearly 200 pounds and reveals what finally changed after years of yo-yo dieting

John Goodman, 74, looks unrecognizable after losing nearly 200 pounds and has kept it off for years.

Beloved Hollywood actor John Goodman, best known for The Big Lebowski, Roseanne and Monsters Inc, has lost around 200 pounds and at 74 years old looks dramatically different from the man audiences watched for decades on screen.

At his heaviest Goodman is believed to have weighed around 392 pounds. He has now lost nearly half his body weight. not through a crash diet or quick fix, but through a slow and deliberate overhaul of his lifestyle that he has maintained consistently over many years.

What changed after years of yo-yo dieting

Goodman has spoken openly about what drove him to make the change and what finally made it stick after years of yo-yo dieting.

“I’d have a handful of food and it’d go to my mouth,” he told People. “In the old days I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud and just go back to my old habits.”

The turning point came when he decided to do it differently. He gave up alcohol and sugar, began exercising regularly and simply stopped eating constantly. Rather than dramatic short-term results he focused on gradual, sustainable change.

“I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself,” he told ABC in 2016. “You’re shaving in the mirror and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”

He also pointed to energy and work as motivating factors.

“I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, because work is very draining,” he said.

His weight had long been a recognizable part of his on-screen presence — from the imposing Walter in The Big Lebowski to voicing the giant monster Sulley in Monsters Inc. But Goodman made clear the change was never about his career. It was about his life.

“I wanted to live life better,” he said simply.
