Kourtney Kardashian has sparked a wave of discussion after fans resurfaced an article she published on her lifestyle website Poosh in which she appeared to identify as autosexual.
A piece titled “Are you low key autosexual?” was written as a collaboration between Kourtney Kardashian and therapist Casey Tanner, founder of QueerSexTherapy, and explored the concept of autosexuality and the possibility that most people sit somewhere on its spectrum.
What autosexuality actually means
Autosexuality refers to people who are primarily attracted to themselves rather than to others, and who may prefer solo experiences over partnered sex.
But Tanner was quick to point out that the definition is broader and more nuanced than it might first appear.
“A trait wherein one is turned on by engaging in their own eroticism,” she explained in the article. “While masturbation is the most obvious example, autosexuality may extend beyond sexual behavior to include feeling a longing or desire for oneself — the ability to turn oneself on through looking at, visualizing, touching, or smelling oneself.”
Tanner also emphasized that autosexuality exists on a spectrum and that most people fall somewhere on it without necessarily identifying as exclusively autosexual.
“Like most human characteristics, autosexuality is a spectrum, and the majority of us are on it,” she said. “Most people incorporate autosexuality into a larger sexual repertoire that also includes being turned on by partnered sex.”
Did Kourtney come out as autosexual?
Kardashian used the article to explore everyday things that could make someone feel attracted to themselves, like wearing lingerie for their own enjoyment, doing hair and makeup, or simply washing themselves with care and attention.
“If feeling sexy independent of someone else has ever turned you on, that’s autosexuality, and it’s totally normal,” she wrote.
Tanner added that being able to turn oneself on is not a sign of selfishness or narcissism.
“Getting turned on by oneself does not mean you think you’re better than other people, that you’re selfish, or that you’re not attracted to your partner,” she said. “Rather, it’s one additional tool in your box for sparking desire and passion.”
While Kourtney has not explicitly stated she identifies as autosexual, but the article and her contributions to it have led many fans to draw their own conclusions.
