A Massachusetts family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of their 8-year-old son after a freak accident at summer camp. 8-year-old Mason was struck by a falling tree and passed away.
Mason Sundberg, 8, was attending YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland on Tuesday morning when a large tree fell, striking him and leaving him critically injured. He was rushed by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, but sadly died from his injuries, the Sudbury, MA Police Department wrote in a statement.
His family has now spoken out, remembering Mason as a loving, funny and fiercely loyal boy who brought joy to everyone around him.
“Mason was funny, goofy and crazy in all the right ways; he will be remembered for singing and dancing around the house with a wide smile on his face and a skip in his step,” they said.
The young camper also loved video games, sushi, swimming and skiing. He adored his dog, River, and was known for “running everywhere” and for going all out with holiday celebrations and decorations, his heartbroken family said.
“He loved to draw and build stories with his friends, a notebook in his bag everywhere he went. His brightness will be missed, but never forgotten to those who loved him,” the statement continued.

A camp employee was also struck in the incident and was treated for minor injuries before being released from the hospital. The camp has since closed while the tragedy is being investigated.
“The entire West Suburban YMCA family is grieving the loss of a young camper when a tree fell at Camp Chickami in Wayland on Tuesday,” West Suburban YMCA President & CEO Jack Fucci said in a statement per NY Post. “We are keeping the camper’s family foremost in our thoughts at this extraordinarily difficult time.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mason’s family and loved ones. Rest in peace.
