Sandra Bullock breaks silence on ‘traumatic’ loss of partner Bryan Randall and secret ALS battle

Sandra Bullock’s longtime partner Bryan Randall passed away after a three-year battle with ALS in 2023. Now, for the first time, the Academy Award-winning actress has spoken out about the traumatic loss.

Sandra Bullock and Bryan Randall met in 2015. The couple made their relationship public later that same year when they appeared at Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding, and for years they stayed together.

However, everything changed as Randall received an ALS diagnosis. In August 2023, his family shared the devastating news that the photographer had died “peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS..

“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request.”

His family also expressed gratitude to the medical teams and caregivers who supported him throughout his illness.

At the time, Sandra Bullock decided to stay quiet. People Magazine reported at the time that “she needed time to care for herself.

“She spent a lot of time healing, being with her kids and being at home,” the source added. “She needed to ensure that she and her kids were in the best possible place for her to go back to work.”

Now, Sandra Bullock has decided to speak out about the devastating event of losing her beloved Bryan. While appearing on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes, the actress opened up about the extreme emotional toll of caring for Randal while keeping his condition out of the public eye.

“He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” Bullock said on the SmarLess Podcast. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request. I wasn’t even allowed to tell Amanda [Anka, Bateman’s wife]. I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for a while.”

While the actress initially felt prepared to stay quiet, she explained that it led her to isolate herself, not least because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do, so I think not talking for a while was good,” she continued, adding that managing the pandemic, the illness, and at the same time being a mother to her children was “a trifecta that was pretty dark.”

“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed”

Sandra Bullock branded ALS “the process of elimination over the course of a year. And somewhere you keep going back, and they give you all these milestones, these things to do, these grips, these breath tests, all these things.”

“You have to quietly plan. And I’m a very good planner with illness,” she said, adding that her father had “accidents” and her mother had cancer. “It doesn’t scare me — not the illness itself, it doesn’t scare me. I can see and be around just about anything. But I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure.”

While ALS is a “traumatic diagnosis,” Bullock said that it changed the dynamic long before he actually passed.

“I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed. There was something that had shifted,” she revealed. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

Sandra Bullock wasn’t alone during the very challenging time of caring for Bryan Randall. Also, on the podcast, she reflected on how her children, daughter Laila, and son Louis, coped.

She explained that her son recognized early on how the household dynamics had changed and decided to take a step back.

“I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” Bullock said on the Smartless Podcast. “My job is to be both at that time. And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f–ked anyway and people are suffering everywhere.”

Rest in peace, Bryan Randall.
