Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer has made a direct and extraordinary appeal to President Donald Trump, asking him to consider pardoning the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children.
Attorney Kevin Reddington made the plea during an appearance on Good Morning America, just days after Clancy’s closely watched murder trial ended in a mistrial when the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
Reddington argued that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and other mental-health problems when her children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and infant son Callan, died at the family home’s in Duxbury, a Boston suburb, on January 24, 2023.
Clancy’s defense has maintained that she was not criminally responsible for the killings because of her psychiatric state, while prosecutors argued that she understood what she was doing.
The jury was ultimately deadlocked at 11-1 after more than 38 hours of deliberations, leaving the case unresolved.
Speaking about his client, Reddington described Clancy as a “wonderful person”, arguing that her actions were the result of a devastating mental-health crisis. He also criticised the medical treatment she received before the killings, claiming that repeated pleas for help, including contacts with suicide hotlines and messages describing her deteriorating condition, were not adequately addressed.
The defense also highlighted the medications Clancy was prescribed and what it claims were failures in her psychiatric care.
In an interview with Good Morning America today, Reddington revealed he hopes President Trump will look into pardoning his client.
“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is, what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said.
He also referenced Trump’s previous comments about the case, saying: “I’d like to say that perhaps Donald Trump, who felt compelled to speak out about this case.”
President Trump spoke about Clancy’s trial on Friday, as per the Daily Mail.
It’s a shame. It’s a horrible tragedy. I see what’s happened and it looks like it’s a hung jury,” the 80-year-old said. “I think the judge has said it’s going to be a mistrial, so there’s going to be another trial.”
“It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing.”
“Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be mental institution or jail or something, but I guess they’re going to go through another trial,” he added.
