Hayden Panettiere’s tragic death sent shockwaves through Hollywood. Now, her cause of death has been confirmed.
The 36-year-old actress, known for her roles in the series Nashville and Heroes, was found unresponsive on August 16 in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.
911 was called at around 1:50 p.m. following a report of an “unidentified female” in cardiac arrest. Efforts were made to save her life, but unfortunately, it was too late.
“Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a statement, according to Page Six.
According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, there were no signs of trauma on Panettiere’s body. Her cause and manner of death led to a further investigation, with the Drug Enforcement Administration also joining the case.

Now, multiple law enforcement sources have claimed to TMZ that Panettiere’s death was the result of her consuming oxycodone laced with fentanyl.
Sources have claimed the actress allegedly had a “long-time drug” dealer who supplied her with black-market prescription drugs, including oxycodone. According to those sources, Panettiere is believed to have consumed the pill on the morning leading up to her death.
According to TMZ, a device used to dispense Narcan, a medicine used to reverse an opioid overdose, was found at the scene of Hayden’s death. Sources told the outlet that it was found on a mattress inside the apartment.
It remains unknown whether the Narcan was intended for Panettiere herself or for another person in the apartment.
Panettiere’s death has left behind a career that touched millions of viewers, from her role as Claire Bennet in Heroes to her portrayal of Juliette Barnes in Nashville. At just 36 years old, her death marks a heartbreaking end to the life and career of an actress who became a familiar face to audiences around the world.
