Seann William Scott spent years chasing roles that could help him escape Stifler’s shadow, until something came along and changed what the American Pie star wanted from Hollywood.
Anyone who watched teen comedies around the turn of the millennium will probably remember Steve Stifler, the obnoxious, foul-mouthed troublemaker who helped turn American Pie into a cultural phenomenon.
The actor who brought him to life, however, has spent years trying to convince audiences that he and his most famous character are two very different people.
‘American Pie’ and the ‘churro guy’
Scott, who turned 50 on October 3, has had a successful career spanning nearly three decades, although his days of dominating Hollywood comedies appear to be behind him.
His journey from struggling young actor to international celebrity also came with an unusually modest first paycheck.
When American Pie arrived in theaters in 1999, the Minnesota-born actor reportedly earned only $8,000 for his performance. He later recalled working at the Los Angeles Zoo, selling churros to make ends meet.
“I remember afterwards I bought a used Thunderbird for like five grand, or maybe six,” he said, per People. “I was like, ‘Oh yeah, baby!’ “
“I don’t know what happened to the other $2,000, because then I ended up having to work at the L.A. Zoo,” he added. “I was a churro guy. So maybe it was even less than $8,000.”
But the film’s success changed everything.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Scott, who had established himself as one of the most recognizable comedy stars of the early 2000s, reportedly earned $5 million for 2012’s American Reunion.
‘Proactive treatment’
Behind that success came a difficult period in 2011, when the star of Dude, Where’s My Car? voluntarily entered a treatment facility for unspecified health and personal issues.
“Seann William Scott has voluntarily admitted himself for proactive treatment to address health and personal issues,” his representatives said in a statement obtained by E! News. “He appreciates the support of his many fans at this time.”
Scott has not publicly disclosed the circumstances behind his decision to seek treatment, but he soon returned to acting.
As the years passed, however, another struggle became increasingly clear – despite taking on other roles, audiences still had trouble seeing him as anyone other than Stifler.
‘I’m a pretty boring guy’
In a 2015 interview with Variety, Scott admitted that audiences had difficulty separating him from the character they loved.
“For the longest time, I just thought that people really thought that I was that character,” he told the outlet. “People love that character so much and they identify with him so much, and eventually I just went along with it.”
As other projects struggled to pull him out of Stifler’s shadow, the character continued to shape how people saw him away from the screen.
“I could tell some people would get a little heartbroken when they met me, because they were expecting this, like, wild party animal, and I’m a pretty boring guy,” the Dukes of Hazzard star said in a March 2026 interview with the Independent. “It felt like I was letting them find out Santa Claus isn’t real.”
Even as Stifler continued to follow him, Scott never stopped acting or trying to show audiences another side of himself, eventually moving into darker material with slasher films like 2018’s Bloodline and 2025’s Dolly.
But by then, something outside Hollywood had changed what he wanted from his career.
‘Just happy to be a dad’
In June 2020, Scott welcomed his daughter, Frankie Rose, with his then-wife, interior designer Olivia Korenberg.
The couple divorced in 2024, and Scott has since explained that his priorities have changed dramatically since becoming a father.
“I feel like I’ve done so much more than I could ever have hoped for in my career, so there’s not much left that I care about creatively,” he told the Independent. “There’s a long list of filmmakers it’d be incredible to work with, sure, but I’m also not desperate for that. I’m happy just to be a dad.”
“I’m happy that I was able to get things going early on in my career, and to now be at the point where I don’t feel like I have anything to prove,” he added.
His quieter approach to Hollywood hasn’t hurt him financially, either.
‘Sort of perfect’
In August 2025, financial filings shared by Us Weekly showed the star of Goon reported average monthly earnings of approximately $110,000 in salary, alongside another $45,000 in royalties and $31,000 in dividends and interest – quite the transformation for the former “churro guy” who received just $8,000 for the role that made him famous.
And today, Scott says he’s perfectly content for Hollywood to occupy a smaller part of his life than it once did.
“I just want to make a fun little project every once in a while, then go home to my daughter,” he told the Independent, adding, “It’s sort of perfect.”
