JD Vance faces backlash for his family’s Halloween picture

JD Vance marked Halloween with a Harry Potter-themed video, dressing up as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore while holding his baby son Alec, who was dressed as Dobby the Elf. Not everyone was a fan of the look or the picture posted by the Vice President of the United States.

Vance posted the video on Saturday, October 31. He wore a long gray wig and robe in it.

“Hey guys, Vice President Dumbledore here with little Dobby the Elf,” he told the camera, before encouraging viewers to “eat a lot of candy.”

The video landed just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, with polls reportedly pointing to a tough night for the vice president’s Republican allies.

What did people say about the costume?

The replies came in thick and fast on X when he posted a picture of his family celebrating the occasion as well.

Some people could not get past the fact that his kids did not look too thrilled in the picture. One person wrote, “I have never seen four more unhappy kids.” While another added, “The unhappiest looking children on Halloween ever.” A third added, “Your children never look happy . 😢 What child isn’t happy on Halloween?”

But there were others who showed support to the Second Family, with one person writing, “Beautiful family. I can’t stop smiling 🥰 Thank you for being a great inspiration for making families great again!!” while another added, “My man!! What a family! You are blessed!!!”

Others also appreciated that his kids were not smiling, with one person writing, “The mean mug from your lil girl is hilarious!!! She’s ready for politics🤣🤣🤣”

Others also criticized his costume choice. “Any excuse to put on a wig and a pretty dress, huh, JD?” one person wrote.

While another person wrote, “You look like a lovely woman, who are you dressed as?”

The reaction comes as Vance is out on the campaign trail, where not every appearance has gone smoothly. Last week, he was called “insensitive” at a CNN town hall in Ohio after joking while answering a young woman’s question about rising prices and affordability.

Who is Vance’s youngest son, Alec?

Alec’s arrival has drawn attention of its own. Usha and JD Vance announced in January that they were expecting their fourth child, and Alec was born in July.

It was the first time since 1870 that a sitting vice president’s family welcomed a newborn. That year, Schuyler Colfax, vice president to Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen had a son.

The Halloween theme had been teased in advance, with Vance noting that his children are fans of Harry Potter. The couple’s eldest son, Ewan, dressed as Harry Potter himself, while Vivek and Mirabel appeared as a spider and a dragon.

In his memoir, Communion, JD Vance wrote that he and Usha had decided against having more children because of the pressures of public life. That changed after the assassination of his close friend Charlie Kirk last fall. Usha became pregnant not long after, and Vance wrote that “one life was stolen from us, but another was given.”
