Jack Nicholson’s son steals the spotlight as fans declare him ’even more handsome’ than his dad

Jack Nicholson’s son Ray has inherited more than just his father’s famous surname.

And now, new pictures of the 34-year-old have fans doing a double take.

The unmistakable Nicholson look

Few actors have ever had a face quite like Jack Nicholson’s.

Across a career spanning decades, the legendary actor became famous not only for his extraordinary performances but also for his unmistakable expressions and foxy charisma.

With three Academy Awards to his name, the Hollywood legend delivered unforgettable performances in films such as Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Shining.

His expressive eyebrows, mischievous grin and ability to switch from charming to unsettling in a split second became part of his signature.

”I knew that early on, about the eyebrows, about the grin,” Nicholson admitted in 2006.

One of the best-known examples came in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining. As Jack Torrance, Nicholson delivered a performance filled with increasingly disturbing expressions, including the now-iconic grin that has remained etched in movie history.

And it turns out that some of those familiar mannerisms may have been passed down to the next generation.

Resemblance when he was still a toddler

Ray Nicholson was born on February 20, 1992, to Jack and actress Rebecca Broussard. He weighed 8 pounds and 6 ounces at birth and arrived just 20 months after Jack and Rebecca welcomed their first child together, daughter Lorraine Nicholson.

Ray grew up in Los Angeles alongside his sister with one of Hollywood’s biggest stars as his father.

In a 1994 interview, Jack made an interesting observation about his young son. While he suggested that Ray looked more like his mother, he had already noticed a striking similarity in the way the boy moved.

”He does move like me,” Nicholson remarked, adding, ”There’s a lot of body language on him.”

Ray was still just a toddler at the time, and nobody knew whether he would eventually follow his father into the entertainment business. But looking back, Jack’s comment seems particularly interesting given how often people would later compare the two.

Ray has also spoken about the influence his father had on him growing up. In one interview, he recalled how much he learned simply by spending time with Jack.

”I ate dinner with him every night. I studied it. That’s how I learned how to be a human being,” he explained.

Following in his father’s footsteps wasn’t easy

Despite growing up around Hollywood, Ray didn’t immediately embrace the idea of becoming an actor.

Having Jack Nicholson as a father meant that expectations were always going to be high. In a 2025 interview, Ray admitted that people had assumed he would pursue acting from an early age, but the thought of measuring himself against a three-time Oscar winner was intimidating.

”There was this crippling pressure I put on myself,” he confessed.

As a child, Ray was more interested in video games and even imagined becoming an astronaut or a sports agent. Acting eventually became his path, but he had to find a way to approach the profession without constantly comparing himself to his father.

There was also another passion in his life: football.

Ray played American football during his school years, but an unexpected medical emergency changed his plans. After his final game, he developed a staph infection that progressed into MRSA. As he revealed in October 2026, the infection became so serious that he faced the possibility of losing his arm.

Thankfully, Ray recovered. But the experience forced him to rethink his future, and acting gradually became a more serious option.

Famous horror role came into the picture

Ray began building his own acting career, appearing in projects including Promising Young Woman, Licorice Pizza and the television series Panic.

Then came a role that brought the family resemblance into particularly sharp focus.

In 2024, Ray appeared in Smile 2, the horror sequel starring Naomi Scott as pop star Skye Riley. He played Paul Hudson, the singer’s late boyfriend, whose unsettling appearances contribute to the film’s disturbing atmosphere.

Director Parker Finn later revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Ray had not originally been specifically written into the role because he was Jack Nicholson’s son. However, his audition impressed the filmmaker, and his resemblance to his famous father made the casting even more appealing.

Finn was a longtime admirer of The Shining, and Ray’s appearance offered an unexpected opportunity to connect the new film with one of horror cinema’s most iconic performances. In other words, the resemblance that people had been noticing for years became part of the filmmaker’s creative vision.

Still, Ray wasn’t simply cast because of his last name.

His audition had impressed Finn, and the role gave him an opportunity to show what he could do in his own right.

Not everyone sees Jack when they look at Ray

Interestingly, Jack isn’t the only famous face people have associated with Ray.

In a March 2025 interview, Ray revealed that strangers sometimes compare him to Leonardo DiCaprio and Sebastian Stan. The DiCaprio comparison had even attracted attention from entertainment publications several years earlier.

But while people may see different actors in his appearance, the connection to his father remains difficult to ignore.

And Ray has gradually become more comfortable with that connection. Rather than allowing the expectations attached to his surname to define him, he has continued working to establish his own career.

A new film brings him back to football

Ray’s latest project has also brought him back to a sport that once played a major part in his life.

In The Mosquito Bowl, directed by Peter Berg, he portrays Tony Butkovich, a real-life Purdue University football star whose sporting career was interrupted by military service during World War II.

The film also stars Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård and Tom Francis. According to Netflix, it opened in select theaters on October 30, 2026, with a streaming release scheduled for November 25.

The role gave Ray the chance to reconnect with football while exploring the story of a young athlete who left his sporting ambitions behind to serve as a Marine.

Preparing for the part also involved a more personal exercise.

In an interview with Esquire, Ray explained that he imagined writing letters to Jack as a young boy. It allowed him to explore what it might feel like to become someone his father could admire, rather than always seeing their relationship from the perspective of a son looking up to a famous parent.

At the film’s premiere, Ray spoke about how unrealistic it had been to compare his own first steps in acting with his father’s decades of experience and remarkable achievements.

His attitude toward the family legacy has clearly evolved. As he put it: “I’ll never be ashamed of being his son.”

New pictures have fans looking twice

On October 29, 2026, Ray attended a Netflix event for The Mosquito Bowl at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City.

Dressed in a gray blazer over a black top, he appeared onstage for a discussion about the film. But while the event was meant to promote his latest project, it was his appearance that caught the attention of many viewers.

In one photograph, Ray can be seen smiling as he speaks into a microphone. His dimples and expressive features are hard to miss, and the image brings to mind the animated expressions that made his father so recognizable.

Another picture shows him sitting with one leg crossed and a microphone in his hand. Seen together, the photographs highlight a resemblance that goes beyond one particular facial feature.

And perhaps most interestingly, they bring Jack’s old observation about his son’s body language back into the conversation.

The comparison is even more noticeable when Ray is seen moving and speaking naturally. It isn’t just the shape of his face or his smile – it’s the way his expressions come together.

Fans are especially taken with his smile

The reactions on social media were quick to arrive, with several people pointing out how much Ray reminded them of his father.

One Instagram user wrote: ”Great effervescent smile..looks so much like his pop with his unique flair! Congrats Ray on your new film”

Others focused on one particular feature that seemed to stand out in the pictures: his dimples.

”DIMPLES are something major! 💙” one person exclaimed.

Another commenter agreed, writing: “Those dimples though”

Not everyone was looking at his smile, however. One Instagram user thought another feature was the giveaway, commenting: ”It’s the forehead that reminds me of his Dad”

And then there were those who weren’t afraid to make a direct comparison between the two actors’ looks.

”Better looking than his dad!” one person declared.

Another was even more enthusiastic: ”Wow!! He’s even more handsome than Jack!!”

Similar comments appeared beneath a Facebook Reel featuring Ray.

”He’s much cuter than his dad,” one viewer wrote, while another added: ”Well he’s hanssey! A better version of his dad.”

One particularly interesting comment took the comparison back to Jack’s younger years, with a viewer writing: “He looks like Jack in easy rider when he was young. Especially the eyes and smile are the same”

How is Jack Nicholson doing today?

While his son Ray is increasingly stepping into the spotlight, Jack Nicholson himself has become a much rarer sight in public.

The 89-year-old Hollywood legend hasn’t appeared in a film since 2010, and his last major public appearance came on February 16, 2025, when he introduced Adam Sandler during the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special.

Although fans were delighted to see him, some expressed concern about his appearance, with several commenting that he looked frail.

Over the years, speculation about his health has continued to follow him. Back in 2013, when asked about his sudden retreat from Hollywood, Nicholson insisted that his mind was as sharp as ever, explaining that he had simply become more selective about the roles he wanted to take.

However, in 2013, RadarOnline published a report claiming that he was retiring because of memory problems.

An unnamed source alleged that he was struggling to remember his lines. In September 2021, the outlet published further claims that he was suffering from dementia. These reports were never confirmed by Nicholson or his representatives.

There have also been more reassuring updates from people close to the actor.

Last year, his longtime friend Danny DeVito offered a positive account of how Nicholson was doing. While promoting the 50th anniversary re-release of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the two actors’ first film together, DeVito spoke about their friendship and revealed that they had recently spent time together.

”I just saw Jack a couple weeks ago – it was his birthday a month ago, and he’s great,” the Taxi star told People.

And while public appearances remain rare, Nicholson’s family has occasionally offered fans a glimpse into his private world.

Last December, his daughter Lorraine, now 36, shared a rare Instagram photograph featuring her father alongside Ray. The picture offered a lovely reminder that, even though Jack has largely stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight, he remains surrounded by his family.

For an actor who spent decades captivating audiences with his unforgettable performances, his absence from public life has certainly been noticed. But perhaps Nicholson is simply enjoying a quieter chapter, away from the cameras and the demands of Hollywood.

And as Ray continues to build a career of his own, fans are getting another opportunity to see a little of the unmistakable Nicholson charm – this time through the next generation.
