Dad’s innocent photo of his family boarding plane gets him kicked off flight

A father hoping to capture a special family moment before boarding a plane was stunned after he was allegedly called “an idiot” for pulling out his phone, leading to his removal from the flight.

In 2024, Jimmy Mitchell was heading to Brisbane with his wife, Pauline, and their children when he pulled out his phone on the outdoor boarding stairs to grab a video of his family.

But Mitchell had missed an important announcement. Passengers had been instructed not to use their phones on the tarmac while the aircraft was being refuelled, a warning he later admitted to not hearing as he was wearing noise-cancelling headphones.

‘Lady calls me an idiot’

As his family continued onto the aircraft, Mitchell found himself in a heated confrontation with a crew member who, he claims, insulted him for taking the picture.

Sharing his experience in a now deleted TikTok video, the father described the incident as humiliating.

“This is the worst experience I’ve ever had flying,” he said, according to the Independent. “I try and get on the plane, I take a photo of my kids as they get on the plane, in flight mode, and the lady calls me an idiot.”

‘You’re not getting on this plane’

The disagreement soon escalated beyond the photograph, with Mitchell claiming the crew member accused him of behaving aggressively.

“I can see how she maybe felt I was being intimidating because I am a big guy and I am a loud guy,” the father of two vented. “She turns around to me and goes ‘you almost assaulted me, get off the tarmac, you’re not getting on this plane’.”

With Pauline and the children already on board, Mitchell was sent back to the terminal to wait, uncertain whether he would be allowed to join them.

He was eventually permitted to board, but the confrontation left him shaken, particularly because he said he had been unable to communicate with his family about what was happening.

‘Almost reduced to tears’

Mitchell, who said his family takes around 25 flights a year, struggled to understand how a photograph had led to such an upsetting experience.

“It’s one thing that she was completely out of line for calling me an idiot, I can get over that I am a big boy, but next time someone you’re supposed to be a customer of calls you an idiot …you tell me next time how you would react in that situation.”

He demanded an apology from Jetstar, while the airline defended its restrictions, saying the tarmac “is an operational space and we remind customers of this via gate PAs”.

“All our customers and team members have the right to feel respected when flying with us or when at work and we’re looking into what took place in this instance,” the spokesperson said.
