Actor Val Kilmer makes rare public appearance after 2-year battle with throat cancer

During a December 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Top Gun actor Val Kilmer admitted that he was recovering following a 2-year battle with throat cancer.

The now-59-year-old opened up about the experience with his ex-wife and 2 children after a history of denying his health issues.

Those health issues first became apparent in January 2015, when a spokesperson told PEOPLE that he was rushed to the hospital “for a possible tumor.” Soon after, he took to Facebook to deny having a tumor, saying only that he “had a complication.”

Since his recovery, the actor has been left with a raspy voice. He is also often short of breath, according to PEOPLE.

However, the actor was seen out and about in a rare public appearance for his TwainMania Foundation, created to educated children on Mark Twain’s legacy.

He was accompanied by his 22-year-old son.

The actor looked barely recognizable. He admitted in the same interview that the cancer diagnosis had taken a toll on his family.
