Police hire a pit bull named Apollo — just days before he was to be killed

Life didn’t start well for a pit bull named Apollo, who was abandoned in Washington state and sent to a kill shelter.

For more than a year, the rambunctious dog waited to be adopted, as one after the other, all the other dogs at the shelter found new forever homes.

Apollo, on the other hand, saw his chances of being euthanized grow by the day.

In a final attempt to save Apollo’s life, the shelter called a Washington State narcotics K-9 trainer and asked her whether Apollo might be good fit for narcotics detection work.

It turned out that Apollo’s upbeat attitude made him an ideal candidate for police work. The trainer ended up hiring Apollo just days before he was going to be killed. He was brought to the Department of Corrections’ narcotics school and started training.

But even though Apollo was saved from a cruel fate, no officers wanted to take him on. The pit bull once again had to wait as dog after dog was chosen over him. Until one day, the Tukwila Police Department heard about Apollo’s great potential.

The Tukwila Police Department wrote on Facebook:

“No one would give him a chance simply because he was a pit bull who often have bad reputations based on misconceptions and lack of training. We decided to give Apollo that chance and we are glad that we did. Apollo finished narcotics school in November of last year and did indeed finish first in his class. He is extremely friendly and can often be found trying to get us to play with him. He has brought great joy to all of us at the department in addition to being a very productive and hard worker. He is now a part of his handlers personal family and the family of the Tukwila Police Department.”

I’m so grateful that there are people out there like the K-9 trainer who saw the good in Apollo.
