An 11-year-old girl is being hailed after saving her little brother from a house fire after their babysitter left to get dinner.
As per reports, Tyshayla Wilson was at home with her five-year-old brother in North Carolina back in March when she noticed that oil had taken flame in their oven.
With their babysitter having quickly gone out to buy dinner for the kids, Tyshayla was left to take responsibility when the kitchen went up in flames.
And take responsibility, she most certainly did.
The 11-year-old is said to have recently been taught about fire safety in school, and so immediately took charge of the situation and called 911.
Dispatcher John Schuler fielded her call and kept Tyshayla calm while advising her how best to help the firefighters to open the windows to the house so that she and her brother could get out.
The young girl’s bravery and quick thinking were celebrated this week, when on Wednesday, May 26, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey presented Tyshayla with an award for heroism.
According to per WSOC–TV, Tyshayla said: “When I was a little girl, I always used to pretend I was a princess. But now that I’m older, I feel like I’m kind of a knight.”
As for Schuler, he was also awarded at the ceremony. Given that he’d helped save her and her brother’s life, Tyshayla wanted to be the one to present him with it.
“He’s one of the most important people in my life now because he saved me and my brother,” she explained.
Stories like this simply make my heart sing with pride. Tyshayla sure is one smart girl!
