Stevie Wonder’s former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, is speaking out after the legendary musician asked a California court for permission to evict her from a Los Angeles property where she has lived for nearly four decades.

Carmen Efferson, who claims Wonder promised her the home through a verbal agreement, has accused the Grammy-winning singer of manipulating the situation and suggested he is trying to portray her as dishonest.

“He’s going to paint this like I am the one who is lying, and there is no talking to this fool,” Efferson told the Daily Mail in an interview published on Wednesday, October 28.

“I’m so sick of someone like him always getting away with this s—,” she added.

Efferson also accused the 76-year-old singer of being a “gaslighter” and a “manipulator,” as the dispute over the property continues to unfold.

However, court documents tell a different side of the story, with Wonder’s legal team claiming that Efferson violated the terms of their arrangement after allegedly refusing to allow an insurance inspector into the house.

Stevie Wonder’s Ex-Fiancée Says He Promised Her The House

Efferson told the Daily Mail that she never initially wanted the property but claimed Wonder repeatedly insisted that she accept it.

“I didn’t even want the house at first — but he kept insisting,” she said.

“I’ve never been a materialistic person, and I never asked for a house. But we came to an agreement, a verbal one, that this would be my house.”

According to the singer’s legal complaint, Wonder and Efferson had a verbal agreement that allowed her to live in the Los Angeles home beginning in 1988.

The filing, submitted to Los Angeles Superior Court on October 22, acknowledges the arrangement but alleges that Efferson breached its terms during the summer.

Wonder’s attorneys claim she refused to allow insurance inspectors to enter the property, despite being asked to cooperate so that the home’s insurance coverage could be maintained.

The dispute has now escalated into a legal effort to terminate the agreement and remove Efferson from the property.

Why Stevie Wonder Is Seeking To Evict Her

According to the complaint, an email sent on July 23 informed Efferson that an insurance inspector would visit the property on July 30.

The inspection was intended to help maintain insurance coverage on the home, the filing states.

However, Wonder’s legal team alleges that Efferson responded two days later by refusing to cooperate.

In her response, she reportedly said she felt “harassed” and did “not consent” to the inspection.

The complaint claims that a 30-day eviction notice was posted the following day. Efferson allegedly remained in the property after the notice was issued.

Wonder’s attorneys have argued that her continued occupancy is “malicious” and are asking the court to terminate the verbal agreement that has allowed her to live there for decades.

They are also seeking reasonable attorney fees and statutory damages related to her alleged continued possession of the home.

The court dispute therefore centers on both the original arrangement between Wonder and Efferson and whether her alleged refusal to permit the inspection gave grounds to end it.

The dispute is currently on-going with a judgement expected soon.
