At one point in 2020, unemployment rates reached 14.8% in April 2020. It was the highest observed rate since data on unemployment began being collected in 1945.
Since then that number has dropped to 5.8%, however it is still higher than it was in February 2020.
For various reasons many Americans have not returned to the work force, and businesses are still struggling.
One restaurant in El Paso, Texas placed a sign on their tables to inform customers about being short-staffed. However, the warning did not go over well.
“Sadly, due to government handouts, no one wants to work anymore. Therefore, we are short staffed,” the sign at Corralito Steak House in El Paso said.
Veronica Frescas shared a picture of the sign on Facebook and people were quick to react.
Several users pointed out that the company received a “government handout” in the form of nearly $1.5 million in PPP loans.
“Wow, so government handouts and not their employee salaries are the reason they can’t find workers?” one person wrote.
