On Friday, the Australian government passed a law banning the sale of new hygiene and cosmetic products that have been tested on animals. The law will come into effect in July 2017 and applies to both end products and ingredients. Existing products, however, will remain on shelves.
“We no longer need to test cosmetics on animals and many countries, including the European Union, have banned the use of cosmetic ingredients tested on animals,” Australia’s Deputy Health Minister Ken Wyatt told the Daily Mail.
The law will bring Australian law in line with the European Union’s existing ban on animal testing. When the European law came into effect in 2013, Camilla Björkbom, president of Animal Rights Sweden, said, “March 11, 2013 is a historic day for Europe’s animal friends. This news from the EU will save thousands of animals from needless and painful experiments.”
Finally! Now we just need the rest of the world to follow these countries’ example.
