Amy Schumer forced to change son’s unusual name after realizing inappropriate word it sounded like

Amy Schumer changed her son’s unusual name after realizing it could be misheard as something… less than ideal.

Naming your child can be a challenge. Some people prepare for years, keeping lists of potential baby names on their phones. Others have a name picked out long before even trying to conceive, while some wait until their baby is born to decide.

No matter how they get there, most parents ultimately choose the name they consider the most beautiful. But in some cases, what initially feels perfect can turn out to be completely wrong, something comedian Amy Schumer knows all too well.

Amy Schumer changed her son’s name

When Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer welcomed their baby boy in 2019, they named him Gene. While they were sure of his first name, his full name, when paired with his middle name, sounded… unfortunate.

His full name at birth was Gene Attell Fischer – something his parents soon came to regret. At first, the name felt right, but it didn’t take long before an issue became clear. When said out loud, it sounded like “genital,” an unfortunate similarity they hadn’t picked up on at first.

“We realized that we by accident named our son ‘genital’”

Once they heard it, they couldn’t unhear it. So, when Gene was 11 months old, they decided to change his name.

Speaking on the Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith podcast at the time, Schumer explained: “So do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer,” according to UNILAD.

“It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we by accident named our son ‘genital’.”

The original middle name, Attell, was chosen to honor Schumer’s friend Dave Attell. Instead, they opted to use his first name.
