Ashley Judd is finally opening up about the final moments of her mother, country singer Naomi Judd’s life. In a special titled The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, the actress what the final conversation was between her and her mother.
Naomi Judd died by suicide in April 2022. At the time of her passing, she was 76 years old. According to Ashley Judd, 57, on the morning of her mother’s death, she received a text from her which read, ‘pls help.’
When she finally got to her mother’s place, she recalled her mother being “uncomfortable in her body,” and was pacing around the kitchen as she expressed her thoughts of how she “didn’t want to be here anymore.”
Ashley revealed how her mother opened up to her about why despite her mental health struggles, she had still held on and “continued to live.”
“One of the things she said was me, and I said, ‘You don’t have to worry about me, Mom. I’m okay. I’m okay.’ And she really clocked that in a really deep way,” Ashley said in the special.
She recalled the painful day, saying her mother then headed upstairs and later Ashley followed her, calling out for her.
When she did not hear her mother respond, she went to her bedroom.
“I saw that she had harmed herself,” Ashley recalled.
She revealed that the next half hour she spent next to her mother, talking to her and holding her.
“The first thing I said to her was, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ve seen how much you’ve been suffering.’ And we just breathed together, and I talked to her and told her how much I loved her, and it’s okay to go,” Ashley recalled the incidents of the fateful day.
“When she died, my most earnest wish was to make sure that she was relieved and absolved of her guilt and her shame. I was holding her hand. I was kissing her. She was so soft. She smelled so pretty,” she said.
An autopsy report from August 2022 confirmed that the singer died by suicide.
The report indicated that Naomi had passed from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in her Tennessee home.
“We have always shared openly both the joys of being family as well as its sorrows, too. One part of our story is that our matriarch was dogged by an unfair foe,” the family said in a statement they released after her death. “She was treated for PTSD and bipolar disorder, to which millions of Americans can relate.”
