99-year-old Dick Van Dyke is best known for his role in Mary Poppins but he is not just popular with children. The actors career has spanned several decades and has been incredibly not just for its length but also the breadth of his work.

And as he approaches his 100th birthday, people are curious about what the secret is behind his long life.

The actor is still healthy and active, and can be seen out and about enjoying himself on occasion.

Now, Van Dyke has revealed what he thinks is the reason he has been able to live a healthy life for so long.

The hack is quite simple, actually; he avoids cigarettes and alcohol.

While things like exercise, eating healthy, and other advice might also be just as valuable, the insight Dick Van Dyke has to offer is quite simple.

He revealed that he smoked and drunk a lot more when he was younger and stopped when he realized that if he wanted to live a more healthier life, these habits could no longer continue.

He shared, “I smoked a lot, actually! I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality.”

He recalled his personality at the time, “If I liked something, I was going to overdo it.” He added, “So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I’m still here.”

Infact, Van Dyke had checked himself into a hospital in 1972 for alcoholism. He soon managed to get sober. During this time, he also managed to quit smoking, which he admitted was harder to do than quitting alcohol.

While he spoke on a podcast he shared about his experience, “It was much worse than the alcohol.”

He shared, “Sometimes I have more energy than others — but I never wake up in a bad mood.”

While he does credit his long life to quitting both of these vices, he also has one other thing he thinks is important for longevity.

He shared, “People say, ‘What did you do right?’ I don’t know. I’m rather lazy. I’ve always thought that anger is one thing that eats up a person’s insides – and hate. And I never really was able to work up a feeling of hate.”

He went on to say, “I think that is one of the chief things that kept me going.”

This is such great advice from one of the truly greats! Share this with other fans of Dick Van Dyke to see what they think!
