During Election Day on Tuesday, Kamala Harris participated in a phone bank event hosted by the Democratic National Committee.
The televised event, however, sparked a stir online after viewers noticed something odd about her apparent phone call with a voter.
The peculiar phone call moment featuring Harris became a talking point online when viewers noticed her phone was open to the camera app during what appeared to be a live call with a voter.
As Harris held the phone to her cheek, she seemed to be actively speaking, saying, “Have you voted already?” and then thanking the person as though receiving a response. But, when the phone’s screen was visible, it seemed to show the camera app rather than an active call.
This detail led to some viewers questioning if Harris was staging the call, as typically, an ongoing call would appear differently on a smartphone screen.
While many assumed she was merely pretending, others explained that the camera app may have stayed open due to certain phone settings or recent app activity.
Some defended Harris, noting that with many modern smartphones, it’s possible to be on a call while a different app remains on-screen.
For instance, a user explained that if the camera app had recently been active, the screen might stay open to it until she re-engaged with the call interface, which would explain why the camera screen remained even as she conversed.
Despite the varied interpretations, the moment quickly spread across social media, generating jokes, confusion, and commentary on the complexity of smartphone interfaces.
One viewer questioned: “Is she pretending to be on the line with someone who’s not there?” while another commented: “Wow…she wasn’t even on a call.”
Yet, several others defended Harris, noting that it’s technically possible to stay on a call with the camera app open. One person said: “When in camera mode, if you answer a call, it goes to camera mode away from your face but returns to a black screen when back to your ear. Just like the video shows. Call was real.”
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s election also saw former President Donald Trump return to the White House.
Trump, speaking from his campaign headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, first celebrated wins in several states, including North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, declaring he had “made history.”
Trump promised his supporters he would be “fighting for you with every single breath in my body” to ensure a “strong, safe, and prosperous America.”
