Gordon Ramsay’s wife Tana shares ‘controversial’ reason he skipped the births of their four eldest children

Tana Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay‘s wife of 27 years, recently revealed the celebrity chef did not attend the birth of the couple’s first four children.

Calling the couple’s decision for Gordon to skip the birth of his children “controversial,” Tana said it was the right choice for their family.

During the August 27 episode of the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, Tana shared the difficulties she and Gordon went through trying to start their family.

“We got engaged in the August, married in December and then we knew straight away we wanted to try for a baby, and it didn’t happen,” she said. “You spend your whole youth trying not to get pregnant and then…you don’t think that they’ll be any issues especially being so young.”

Tana, 50, said she felt like a “failure,” but soon found out she had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which created some challenges. The couple also learned that Gordon, 57, “had a slightly low sperm count.”

“I think it helped that we both had a slight issue, which together caused the problem, but it didn’t mean the focus was on just one of us.”

The couple tried in vitro fertilization (IVF) and after the first round Tana found out she was pregnant with the couple’s first child.

“We were very fortunate, but we sort of had that brush with not having a straightforward route,” she said. “It was very quickly solved and we had Meg.”

When it came time to give birth, Gordon was nowhere to be found in the delivery room. Tana recalled telling the Michelin-starred chef if he didn’t feel comfortable being there, he didn’t have to.

“It just felt right” the mother of six said, adding, “He would’ve gotten all squeamish and probably fainted and all the attention would’ve been on him, and this is my moment.”

“It didn’t ever really bother me and I actually felt quite happy when we talked about it.”

Instead of having her husband by her side, her mother was present for the birth of the Ramsay’s first four children. When it came time for the couple’s two youngest to be born, Gordon had changed his mind.

“I think he wanted to be there and I thought it was nice,” she said.

“I think it was after what we went through with losing Rocky, our little boy,” Tana said, recalling a miscarriage she suffered in 2016.

“Gordon looked at me and said, ‘I’m not going anywhere, I’m staying in for this.”

Gordon and Tana are parents to six children: Megan, 26, twins Jack and Holly, 24, Matilda “Tilly”, 22, Oscar, five and nine-month-old Jesse.
