John Oliver has x-rated response after being cut off while giving speech about his dead dog at Emmys

Comedian John Oliver pulled no punches last night after being cut off at the Emmys while in the middle of delivering an emotional speech about his late dog.

Yesterday (September 15) marked the 2024 Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in LA, just eight months on from the 2023 Emmy Awards, which took place in January 2024 due to the US writers’ and actors’ strikes (confusing, we know).

In any case, the event saw wildly popular dark comedy Baby Reindeer take home home four Emmys on the night, but it was arguably John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, who stole the show.

The 47-year-old comedian was cut off mid-speech as he began talking about his dead dog after winning the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series award.

Oliver took to the stage to claim his prize, before launching into an acceptance speech wherein he looked to pay tribute to his dearly departed pooch.

“I also want to thank – this is going to be very silly – our dog,” Oliver said.

“We had the most fantastic dog. She was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us through the two pregnancies.”

Yet in the middle of his speech the ‘get-off-stage’ music began to play throughout the venue, prompting Oliver to add: “Perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to her.”

The TV star yelled: “F**k you,” while the audience erupted into laughter.

“I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now,” Oliver added. The Emmys then turned off the soundtrack to let him finish his speech.

“She was an amazing dog. Ouch. This isn’t just for her – this is for all dogs. You’re all very good girls. You’re very good boys. You all deserve a treat.

“Play me off now,” he concluded.

Fans were quick to react to Oliver’s speech online. One wrote: “So this was something. John Oliver wins an Emmy. He starts to thank his dog, who recently died, and they start playing him off stage, which he did not appreciate.”

Another added: “I’m crying. John Oliver dedicated his Emmy to his dog who just passed away, and all the girl and boy dogs out there – says give them a treat!”

Elsewhere at the event, the Emmys’ 76th edition, Shogun took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series, with Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun) winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Anna Sawai (also Shogun) winning Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
