According to Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos the secret to marriage is avoiding a vow renewal.
The couple, now co-hosts of Live with Kelly and Mark, recently revealed their secret on an episode of their morning talk show.
“We are very superstitious about vow renewals,” Ripa said.
The 52-year-old actress and television personality even went as far as to suggest the ceremony was the “kiss of death” and should come with “divorce papers.”
“I just feel like a vow renewal is a pre-divorce,” she added. “It’s like, ‘We’re not getting along… I know what we should do!’ “
Her husband of 27 years also agreed, saying a vow renewal typically comes after the husband “messed up.”
“And I’m not talking about ‘leaved the toilet seat up,’ he said. “I’m talking about messed up!”
Ripa and Consuelos first met while on the soap opera, All My Children in the mid-90s.
“I’m a very practical person, but there was something about him,” Ripa told People in April. She had a feeling Consuelos was her “future hubs.”
On May 1, 1996 the couple eloped in Las Vegas. They have three children together, Michael, 26, Joaquin, 20, and Lola, 21.
We’ve heard a lot of secrets to long marriages, but no vow renewal because it’s the kiss of death? We’re not sure about that.
