Mayim Bialik says goodbye to fans after ‘Call Me Kat’ is cancelled after only three seasons

The comedy TV series Call me Kat quickly shed its nine lives when it was cancelled after only three years.

In the spring of 2023, when the network announced it was pulling the plug on the show without offering viewers any closure, Bialik, 48, shared a sweet social media post, telling fans to “decide the ending you want.”

Mayim Bialik was only 13 when she played a Bette Midler’s character as a young girl in the critically acclaimed film Beaches.

“I know Beaches is so special to so many people,” Bialik writes of her role in the 1988 film. “It is for me, too, but in a different way. It was this movie that changed my life and catapulted me into working on sitcoms, which determined the course of my career and life.”

She then starred alongside Jennifer Aniston in the short-lived sitcom Molloy (1990).

It was just the beginning for the child star who at 16 played the affable title character in the hit TV series Blossom.

The show, that aired from 1990 to 1995, provided the stage for Bialik to develop a future of successful comedic performances.

But the young woman had goals outside of acting and after filming the last season on Blossom, she earned a degree in neuroscience and later her doctorate.

Life after ‘Blossom’

In addition to her impressive education, the 48-year-old woman also had a starring role in The Big Bang Theory as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler – a neuroscientist – a role that earned her four Primetime Emmy Awards from 2010 to 2019.

Two years before her first appearance, Bialik was mentioned in an episode in the first season, “The Bat Jar Conjecture.”  Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj, suggests the brilliant friends recruit “the who played TV’s Blossom.” to join their Physics Bowl team.

Bialik had a guest role in season three and the next year, as the girlfriend of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) she was promoted to the main cast.

When the show ended after more than a decade, the mother of two sons said, “We had an amazing run. This is my second time on a long running show and that’s truly unbelievable. All things must end – even the good things. It’s a shift. And we are shifting.”

From 2021 to 2023, Bialik shared hosting duties with Ken Jennings on Jeopardy! all the while playing the lead role in the sitcom, Call Me Kat.

The show, produced by Parsons, her former co-star from Big Bang Theory, told the story of a quirky woman – named Kat – who left her job as a professor and opened a cat café.

Running over three seasons, it gave fans the opportunity to see Bialik in a different character, and one that closely mirrors her real-life passions.

“She’s the closest thing to me that I’ve ever played,” the vegan, who off-screen rescues special needs cats, tells TV Insider.

‘Hard to say goodbye’

In December 2022, 67-year-old Leslie Jordan, one of the shows stars, was driving to film an episode of Call Me Kat when he had a sudden cardiac dysfunction and died.

Adding to his loss, the show’s ratings were dwindling and reviews were poor, leading to its cancellation after only three seasons.

Saying goodbye to loyal fans of the show, the author took to social media and shared her love.

She writes, “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday….”

After calling out each of her co-stars, including the late Jordan who died months before, Bialik continues, “Decide the ending you want, but for me, here’s where I think we all end up: Kat and Max live happily ever after, Randi and Carter get married and do the same, and Sheila is forever in everyone’s life bringing joy and wisdom. And Phil lives on forever. Thank you for being a part of our journey.”
