Actor Javier Bardem has always been known to be outspoken about his politics, and in his appearance at the 2026 Oscars, as usual, he did things not so differently. However, viewers were intrigued by one detail.

Javier Bardem, along with Priyanka Chopra Jonas, were presenting the Oscar for best international feature film. Bardem began with the presenting of the award with a few simple words. He said, “No to war and free Palestine.”
The actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas stood behind the actor as he said the words, smiling politely as the crowd cheered and clapped in support of his political stance.
However, those well-versed in Chopra’s politics over the last few years were quite amused that she had been on stage with Bardem as he sent a strong political message. A X user posted, “Javier Bardem saying No to war and Free Palestine in front of Modi supporter and Indian Dal Gadot Priyanka Chopra is iconic as hell.”
Another person posted, “”No to war, and free Palestine,” said Javier Bardem while presenting at the Oscars And BJP’s Gal Gadot kept showing her tooth and couldn’t even clap,” referring to Chopra’s support of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Modi, who is the leader of leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a right-wing organization rooted in Hindutva, a Hindu nationalist ideology. Modi has dramatically shifted India’s traditional neutrality by openly embracing Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu, leading to a “de-hyphenated” policy that prioritizes strategic defense ties even amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Chopra famously hosted PM Modi at her New Delhi wedding reception in 2018, later tweeting her gratitude for his “blessings” and “kind words.”
In May 2025, she released a video specifically thanking the Prime Minister for his “vision” in launching the WAVES Summit, calling it a historic and “bold step” for India on the world stage.
People thought that Chopra was uncomfortable standing next to Bardem as he made his political message. One person wrote, “Love this, particularly because Priyanka-Hindutva fascist- Chopra is awkwardly standing next to him.”
Another wrote, “Priyanka Chopra is so fake with a carefully planned PR image that tries to benefit from the western liberal ideas of feminism & diversity while also supporting the right-wing Hindutva govt at home. I guess her PR team didn’t tell her how to react to this, hence her awkward smile.”
