Shannen Doherty’s doctor reveals star’s tragic last words – “She wasn’t ready to leave us’

Shannen Doherty’s doctor and close friend, Dr. Lawrence D. Piro, has spoken candidly on the star’s final moments.

Dr. Lawrence reportedly helped the Charmed actress throughout her battle with breast cancer, and was one of the individuals to have been in the room when she passed away.

According to RadarOnline, the doctor described Doherty’s final moments, telling how she was surrounded by family, close friends, and her dog Bowie.

The entertainment industry was plunged into mourning this weekend after the confirmation that actress Shannen Doherty, perhaps best known for her work on shows such as 90210 and Charmed, had lost her battle with cancer.

The 53-year-old was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 but went into remission in 2017 following successful treatment.

Two years later in 2019, though, Doherty broke word to her fans that her cancer had returned and was in stage 4. Thus began a new fight for her life which sadly proved to be one she could not win.

On Saturday, Doherty’s longtime publicist Leslie Sloane shared a statement with People confirming the news.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”

Dr. Lawrence D. Piro, who was a close friend of Doherty’s, has now revealed how Doherty’s final moments of life played out, describing the star as “very comfortable”.

“In the last few hours, she was in a place where she was very comfortable and sleeping and transitioning, and she was surrounded by some of her very close friends,” Dr. Lawrence said.

“The room was surrounded by a select group of friends that were giving her a lot of care and support. It was somber and sad, but beautiful and loving. The hardest thing about this was that she wasn’t ready to leave because she loved life.”

Speaking to PEOPLE about his patient’s treatment, Piro explained: “We kept going until we couldn’t go any more. The last conversation that we had, she was in the process of realizing that things had taken a pretty significant turn.

“The conversation was about love and support and caring and still fighting through. She wanted to continue to take treatment and fight through, even though her physical condition had taken a bit of a downturn. And so we did.”

Rest in peace, Shannen Doherty.
