Suzanne Somers reveals her breast cancer returned, is taking a break from work

Suzanne Somers, 76 has announced that she recently battled breast cancer again and will be putting her work “on the back burner” as she recovers.

The Three’s Company and Step by Step star told ET that she recently had a “recurrence of my breast cancer.” She was first diagnosed in 2000 and underwent a lumpectomy.

“I have been living with cancer since my 20’s,” she said in a statement. “And every time that little f***** pops up, I continue to bat it back. I do my best not to let this insidious disease control me.”

“Like any cancer patient, when you get that’s dreaded, ‘It’s back’ you get a pit in your stomach. Then I put on my battle gear and go to war. This is familiar battleground for me and I’m very tough.”

The actress has faced a number of health battles over her career. She was diagnosed with hyperplasia in her 20s and battled skin cancer in her 30s, according to Page Six.

“Even when I was Chrissy on Three’s Company, I had had cancer three times,” Somers told CBS Los Angeles in 2020. “They call it severe hyperplasia in your uterus. I didn’t make a big deal about it. In my 30s, I got a malignant melanoma in my back.”

Somers’ longtime husband Alan Hamel told Page Six that Somers is now cancer-free, but she will be taking some time off from her career to focus on her health.

“We decided to put work on the back burner for now and focus on her health,” Hamel said. “On June 6, she got an all-clear, but cancer is tricky and we will now closely monitor everything going forward.”

In recent years Somers has been a health advocate: she has embraced an all-organic diet and advocated for Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which she credits for saving her life.

“My doctors said that if I didn’t lead a chemical free life, supported by bio- identical hormones, I would not likely be here today,” Somers told ET. “I am so grateful to all my fans for all the loving wishes. That means so much to me. God Bless America.”
