The movie was filmed at New York’s famous Plaza Hotel, which was owned by the then-president and then-real estate mogul and managed by his then-wife, Ivana Trump.
In a 2025 interview with The Guardian, Curry looked back on the experience and recalled some rather awkward moments behind the scenes.
At the time, Donald Trump and his then-girlfriend, Marla Maples, were constantly making headlines. According to Curry, Trump was also eager to turn the film set into a networking opportunity, hoping to use his connections to help promote Maples and open doors for her.
“He was very anxious to find Chris Columbus, the director,” Curry told The Guardian. “He said, ‘I’ve got to get Marla to meet Chris Columbus because she’s a brilliant actress’. And I thought, ‘Yeah, I’m sure’.”

The actor also found himself caught in an awkward moment involving Trump’s ex-wife, Ivana, while staying at the hotel during filming.
“She knocked on my door and said, ‘Are you happy in your room? Do you like the way it looks?’ – and I loathed it actually,” Curry said.
But it was Trump himself who provided another memorable moment Trump famously appeared in a brief scene in the movie, when Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, asks him for directions inside the Plaza.
The cameo has become one of the movie’s most recognizable moments, but the story behind it has been disputed for years.
Director Chris Columbus has said that Trump insisted on appearing in the film as a condition for allowing the production to use the Plaza Hotel. Trump, however, has given a very different version, claiming the filmmakers essentially begged him to make the cameo.
Whatever happened, we know one thing. Tim Curry will be forever missed.
