Neighbors helping neighbors. You read about it often and hope that if you ever find yourself in need that your neighbor will lend a hand when you’re down.
Recently, Lane Unhjem suffered a heart attack while farming on his property near Crosby, North Dakota. To make matters worse, the medical emergency occurred after his combine harvester caught on fire.
Once his neighbors found out about his situation, they rushed in to help.
“I talked to a couple of farmers, got their equipment, and then other people just started calling and we had equipment offered from all over the place in the county, and their workers to go with it,” Jenna Binde, a family friend, told KYFR.
Between 40 and 50 people showed up to Unhjem’s farm with their own equipment to help harvest the rest of his crops.
It took 11 combines, 6 grain carts, 15 semis, and various other farm equipment, but the kind-hearted neighbors were able to plow through 1,000 acres of crops in just over seven hours.
“The Unhjems have a beautiful crop that will be safe in the bins today, and more importantly they have the comfort of knowing that they have a community of friends that are helping, praying and doing whatever they can to help them get through this tough time,” Don Anderson, a neighbor who helped, wrote on Facebook.
According to reports, Unhjem was flown to a hospital in Minot, where he remains in stable condition.
“What a great sense of pride we can all have knowing that when we face something like this, we’re not alone.”
This is the kind of community I want to live in. I want to know that I can rely on my neighbors when I find myself in need, and I want them to know they can rely on me when they are in need.
