3-year-old whose cancer battle inspired the nation passes away after years-long battle

A 3-year-old girl whose fight with cancer attracted the attention of the nation passed away over the weekend, prompting tributes and messages of support.

As per reports, Callie June Shaffer, who faced neuroblastoma bravely until the very end, died on Friday morning.

Her heartbroken family confirmed the devastating news in a post to the Facebook group they had used to update followers of her struggle, named Callie Strong, Tiny But Mighty.

A lot of people have been asking about Tyler and how he is. He is heartbroken and sad but doesn’t really fully…

The family post reads: “Today our sweet warrior Callie June turned in her princess crown for a halo and a pair of wings. She passed so peacefully, all the fears we had about what it will be like in the end, those were nowhere near. She was surrounded by so much love and we are sure she was welcomed in grand style into Heaven. Where there is no more pain, no hospitals, no more owies….finally our tiny but mighty warrior princess can dance and run and play. We are here and we are hurting from our loss but she is free, she will forever be with us.”

Callie had been fighting neuroblastoma for years, since shortly before her adoption by Albree and Tiffany Shaffer. That particular form of cancer is said to almost always affect children, and in Callie’s case it was aggressive.

As per reports, the young girl appeared cancer-free for a time, but it returned, forcing her parents to consider clinical trials for experimental treatment.

Back in August of this year, Albree and Tiffany shared a heartwarming video of Callie playing in a castle like a princess.

“We are only strong because Callie showed us true strength and gave us strength we never knew possible,” they said in a statement following her passing.

fundraiser has been set up to help with costs associated with Callie’s burial. The Shaffer family have said they will post information about the celebration of her life in the near future.

Callie’s brother, Tyler, meanwhile, is said to be having a difficult time. Albree and Tiffany have set up an Amazon wishlist for those would like to send him a gift “to put a smile on his face in this difficult time.”

Cancer truly is a horrible disease. My heart goes out to the Shaffer family at this difficult time.

Rest in peace, little Callie, may the Lord welcome you into his garden with open arms.

Share this article if you, too, want to send love and support in the direction of Callie’s grieving family, and indeed to all those families who have lost someone to cancer.
