Given the national make-up of Harry and Meghan Markle‘s union, it makes perfect sense that their explosive interview with Oprah has been covered with equal interest on both sides of the Atlantic.
When the formerly royal couple sat down to divulge the secrets behind their acrimonious exit from perhaps the world’s most famous family, we all knew it was going to be big.
What we didn’t realize, was just how big.
After all, Harry and Meghan’s dealings with the palace have been the subject of controversy for the past year, and with the couple no longer officially tied to the palace, the shackles were off with regards to what they could say.
To that end, they took full advantage.
The highly-anticipated interview, which aired at the weekend, was full of allegations both explosive and severely damaging to the image of the British royal family.
Amongst other things, Meghan admitted that she had at times felt suicidal during her time in the U.K., accusing the royals of isolating her and perpetuating falsehoods.
“I don’t know how they could expect, after all of this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” she told Oprah.
“If that comes with risk of losing things … there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”
More serious, though, was Meghan’s talk of feeling suicidal.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she told Oprah. “And that was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought.”
Not only that, but she accused various figures in the royal family of broaching the subject of her son Archie’s skin color before he was born.
Though she and Harry made it clear they would not be naming any names, they made it clear that someone was responsible for behaving in a wholly inappropriate way. Needless to say, the news outlets took that and ran with it.
So volatile was the kickback regarding Harry and Meghan’s claims, that Queen Elizabeth herself was forced to swiftly comment on the matter,
“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the Queen’s statement reads.
The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.
Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
Prince William, meanwhile, yesterday claimed that his was “not a racist family”, and that he plans on talking to Harry but has not done so yet.
Despite calls for investigations and change, however, Harry and Meghan have their detractors, of that there can be little doubt.
Commentators in both the U.K. and the U.S. have been ready to cast their aspersions as to the truth behind the claims made, though few have done so with the predictable ferocity of political activist Candace Owens.
In an appearance on Fox News this week, Owens did what she does best – that is to say make the most controversial comment possible in the hope of getting her fix of that infamous drug known as attention.
During her appearance, Owens called Meghan both a “liar” and a “narcissist”. She also accused her of failing to keep her story straight.
Referring to Piers Morgan leaving his show in the U.K. after openly calling Meghan a liar, Owens said: “Piers Morgan was all of us when he was dressing down Meghan Markle and calling her out on the blatant lies that she’s told.
“She can’t even keep her story straight, by the way, if anybody remembers, about three years ago she said in a panel that she does not read newspapers, that she does not check social media because she does not like to read stories about her.”
Owens then said that this meant Meghan was lying about feeling suicidal because of intense pressure from the press, and moved on to suggesting that she couldn’t have been racially abused because “you look at her, you would not be able to discern just by looking at Meghan Markle that she’s black.”
I don’t know about you, but I think any person who labels someone a liar after they’ve admitted to having felt suicidal, is a coward.
