Donald Trump has seemingly sparked a negative baby name trend in America

Donald Trump may have made a big impact on American politics, but new data shows his name is having the opposite effect when it comes to what parents are calling their babies.

According to figures from the Social Security Administration reported by NOTUS and The Independent, 2025 was the lowest point in recorded history for the name Donald in the United States. Fewer than 400 babies were given the name last year, with Donald now ranking 690th among the most popular names in the country.

The drop, however, actually began long before Trump entered politics. He was born in 1946, shortly after Donald had peaked in popularity, and the name stayed in the top 100 throughout the 1990s.

Things started to shift in 2004, the first year The Apprentice aired with Trump as its star, when the name fell to 263rd. By 2016, the year he was first elected president, it had dropped further to 489th. There was a brief uptick in 2017, but the name has continued sliding since, landing at its current low of 690th.

‘Donald’ not the only presidential name taking a hit

Trump is not the only president whose name has seen a dip. The Independent also points out that the name Joseph fell to its lowest ranking in over two decades in 2024, the same year Joe Biden left office. Barack has never even cracked the top 1,000 names in US history.

Melania did see a brief spike in 2017 around Trump’s first inauguration, but has not appeared in the rankings since.
