Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped a number of bombshells during their interview with Oprah Winfrey, the fallout of which has been devastating for the Royal Family.
Of all the reactions to have been anticipated from the general public, however, perhaps sympathy as to the pair’s financial situation wasn’t one.
And yet a crowdfunding campaign was launched on GoFundMe to help Harry and Meghan pay off the mortgage on their gigantic home in Montecito, California.
Prince Harry had talked candidly during the Oprah interview about having been financially cut off by the British Royal Family after he and Meghan decided to seek independence.
“I’ve got what my mum left me, and without that, we would not have been able to do this,” he said to Oprah.
The GoFundMe, set up by California resident Anastasia Hanson, aimed to raise $10 million to help the couple keep their large roof over their heads.
Titling the campaign “Harry and Meghan $5 Donation to Buy Home”, Anastasia denied that the whole thing was a joke. All the same, it was shut down after raising just $110.
“I am raising funds to pay off the mortgage for the Montecito, California home of Harry and Meghan,” the page had read.
“When they came to the USA they were without jobs and with limited funds.
“They’ve stated that they’ve had a very rough time, so this fundraiser is a way to give help, compassion, and love by paying their home loan in full.
“I personally relate to mental health, racial equality, diversity, and inclusivity. They both support these issues as well. Together, they can help bring healing and restoration to the whole world.”
The campaign was short-lived, however, and now only a “Campaign Not Found” message welcomes those who try to find the fundraising page. Harry and Meghan are said to have purchased the mansion in question for around $14.7 million.
Amongst the more explosive allegations from their Oprah interview were those including Meghan talking openly about feeling suicidal during her time as a British royal, and the pair claiming members of the family had asked what color their son Archie’s skin might be when he was born.
