Given the general lack of information released to the public regarding the surgery that saw Kate Middleton hospitalized for two weeks, it’s no great surprise that speculation and rumor have been rife.
Despite Kensington Palace insisting that the Princess of Wales’ procedure had been planned, and later that she was doing well in her recovery, there have been other, more sensational reports that implied Kate’s very life was at risk.
Late last month, Spanish journalist Concha Calleja insisted on Spanish news program Fiesta that Kate had even been placed into a coma as a result of complications stemming from her surgery.
And while the Royal Family have been reluctant to say much at all regarding Kate’s stay at the London Clinic, they have been left infuriated by Calleja’s claims, according to an insider.
That the Princess of Wales would suddenly be admitted for abdominal surgery – without prior warning to the public, we might add – was always going to pique the curiosities of royal fans and royal detractors alike.
Add to that the fact that it was confirmed by Kensington Palace that Kate would remain in hospital for as long as two weeks after her surgery, and would not be expected to resume royal engagements until at least after Easter, and it could be said that people were well within their rights to wonder just how serious Kate’s health issue was.
Such concerns were hardly helped when Spanish journalist Conca Calleja claimed that Kate had developed complications after her procedure.
“The doctors had to take drastic decisions at that moment because of the complications that arose,” she claimed, according to The Times.
“The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. There were serious complications that they didn’t expect because the operation went well, but the postoperative period didn’t go so well.”
The claims gained a lot of attention in Spain, before then spreading around the world. According to People, however, a palace insider has branded them entirely false.
“It’s total nonsense,” a palace source told The Times. “No attempt was made by that journalist to fact-check anything that she said with anyone in the household. It’s fundamentally, totally made-up, and I’ll use polite English here: it’s absolutely not the case.”
Though Kate will now continue her recovery at home, it’s been reported that the princess yet has a long road to recovery ahead of her. Prince William may now return to his official duties since his wife has been discharged from hospital, but Kate is likely to be forced to sit out of action until after Easter.
According to Page Six, Kate may eventually decide to clarify certain details pertaining to the exact nature of her surgery, though for the time being not much has been revealed.
