Pete Davidson was 8 when his hero dad died on 9/11 – the way he found out is utterly heartbreaking

Pete Davidson is best known for bringing humor and laughs to people’s lives, but it’s also an undeniable fact that he has endured his fair share of tragedy.

The comedian has often spoken on the topic of his late father, an on-duty firefighter who lost his life during the September 11 attacks in 2001. Davidson, now 29, was only eight years old when his dad Scott responded to the World Trade Center buildings after terrorists crashed two commercial airliners into the Twin Towers.

Almost 3,000 people died, leaving New York City with scars it may never truly heal from. Davidson’s family were of course among the tens of thousands of mourners, with Scott having made his way to the World Trade Center after the second airliner struck.

“Scott’s acts of heroism are not surprising,” the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website reads.

“He was a brave and fearless man and a devout patriot. He was a friend to many‚ and will be sorely missed by us all.”

“Materialistic things were not of importance to Scott,” the website continues. “The most important things to Scott were his two children‚ his son Peter‚ 8 years old‚ and his daughter Casey‚ 4 years old.

“He was very proud of them‚ and he was happiest while coaching them‚ having a catch or watching a dance recital.

“He coached his son Peter in football and baseball‚ and his daughter Casey was certainly a ‘Daddy’s Girl.’ He loved his children above all things.”

Tragically, reports state that Scott Davidson was last seen heading up the World Trade Center’s stairs, minutes before it collapsed.

As for his young son, Pete, the manner of his finding out about his hero dad’s death makes for an equally heart-wrenching story.

During an appearance on actor Jon Bernthal’s podcast, Real Ones, earlier this year, Pete recalled how his dad was supposed to be picking him up from somewhere on the day of 9/11.

“I got picked up by my mum,” he said.

“She didn’t tell me what was going on for like three days. She kept telling me dad’s at work, I had no idea.”

The comedian added: “My mum’s like, ‘You’re just grounded, you’re not allowed to watch TV’. I was like, ‘What? I didn’t do anything’. And then one night I turn on the TV and I saw my dad on TV. They’re like, ‘These are all the fireman who are dead’.”

Today we pay tribute to all those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.
